Back in the day – before Instagram, before social media – tattoo shops were everything.
Shops had the power. The split was always 50/50.
And truly well-known artists? You could count them on one hand.
If you wanted to see their work, you had to go to conventions.
Clients didn’t come for a specific artist. They came to the shop. Most artists didn’t have much power back then. The shop was the name.
Now it’s different.
Everything is online.
Artists promote themselves. The era of private studios is here.
People DM. They book in advance.
They find everything on Instagram.
You don’t even need a shop anymore.
You can rent a small private studio, work alone, and still get clients.
So what happened?
Street-level tattoo shops started disappearing.
High rent. More work to manage. Less “necessary.”
Everyone went private.
But we saw it differently.
If everyone is going private,
that means one thing: There are fewer real walk-in shops now.
Same-day tattoos aren’t easy anymore.
Sure, walk-in shops still exist.
But where are the really good artists?
Most of them are in private studios, or fully booked, or working strictly by appointment.
So we thought this is an opportunity.
New York used to have legendary walk-in shops.
A lot of them are gone now.
So why not build one again?
That’s how Genyth Tattoo was born.
A walk-in specialist!
A place where you can come in anytime and get tattooed by someone truly good.
Not just available – but actually skilled.
A shop where it doesn’t matter who you get. You’ll still walk out with a solid tattoo.
